Big 400 starter

I am having fits with the starter on my 400 diesel. I have had it off twice an to the local shop because it keeps locking up. he told me last time that I probably better be looking into a new starter. Prestolite doesn't make this starter anymore is what he said. Well this morning it did it again! 3 strikes its out. Can anyone tell me what starters will interchange with it an best place to get one? Thanks for the help as always.

From the information you have given us, I would first find a more reputable starter repair shop. I know Bendix starter drive and brushes and bushings should put you back on the road second opinions always help The crossover number with auto electric is MCK ? 4005 . Let's hope that get you on your way. CM

Any idea why it's locking up?
As far as gear reduction replacements I've had good luck with DB Electric for my Dodge Cummins and my Kubota Bobcat.

Hope this helps

I agree with Cornerpost. I'd check the ring gear all the way around for problems, and if nothing obvious shows up, check it for out of round. Finally, I'd check for clearance between the starter pinion and ring gear. If you don't find any problems in those areas, then I'd focus on the starter. But, you are there, and we are not, so good luck.

When you say it's locking up, does it stay engaged and you have to unhook the battery? I have exchanged starters between the 500,600's 800's. Main thing was to check number on starter drive cover, Should start with a P. Will get that number later.
