Case 580ck shuttle problem

My Dad just gave me his 1977 580ck extendahoe, under the condition that I fix it, and he gets to borrow/use it (smart man). I have already had to replace the ring and pinion in the transaxle a couple years ago.

Now, it has no forward/reverse for a while warming up. He said he reved it up for a while, and then it made a horrible "bang" and began to move, and then reverse nothing and then "bang" and began to move. The shuttle is not working correctly.

I have the manual, but it only lists Main pressure @ idle 65 psi neutral, and 130 psi @2000 rpm neutral. There are no listings in the manual for forward and reverse pressures @2000rpm, just a worksheet to write the numbers down. I bought a transmission pressure gauge 600psi to do some diagnostics on the main and converter output ports.

What pressures should I read for forward and reverse @2000rpm?

At our dealership we sold many of those units, how long do you have to wait for the shuttle to start to work? I am sure you have already checked the oil level. I check them idling with the transmission in gear and the shuttle engaged, make sure the machine is securely locked down so it cannot move, this method insures that the converter if fully charged and the transmission being locked up so the gears are not moving does away with oil splash. I would wait till the drive is operational to check it so the converter is full, fill it running up to level on the stick.

Believe it or not that was typical of those machines and customers would start them and sit down and have a coffee till the machine was ready to work. 10 -15 minutes was not unusual.

I jumped the gun and found the pressures listed in the troule-shooting section of the manual. The 600 psi gauge I bought did not have the dynamic range to observe the change from nuetral to drive f/r. Waiting on a 150 psi gauge that is on order. I have to fix the battery cables and glow plugs to make it easier to start and test. It looks like it is leaking mutch fluid from the control shaft.

I will drop the pan and inspect the intake filter first and fix the control shaft leak first. Then I will check the pressures.

Thanks for your reply. I will keep you posted of my progress.

Sorry, I gave you info pertaining to a 580 pre C series, If your machine has a small pan to remove and clean the inlet screen you have at least a C 580 series. The refill procedure I mentioned is still valid tho. The Cs did not have the lag problem the earlier models that owners considered a part of the beast.

In general, the later shuttles as the C series had were a very durable unit but when failure happened it was generally the forward clutch and reverse would act normally, hopefully you will be able to restore operation but if the screen is plugged there is a failure somewhere as that is a self contained sealed unit and contamination is usually caused by clutch disc failure
