My 411 is 12 volt with a Delco Remy single post alternator . I am hoping I have wired it correctly except for the lights ,which I will change tomorrow . The ammeter reads 12.9 on both the +and - posts of the AMETER with the ignition turned off. Why do I think this is incorrect. I added an NTE5809 capacitor to the wire coming off that post to the LOAD side of the ignition switch. The single post at the alternator also reads 12.9 volts. CM

Sorry , the wire with the capacitor is coming off the two pronged connector at the alternator leading to the load side of the ignition switch.

Wire from output stud of alternator goes to one side of ammeter, other side of ammeter to battery supply cable at the starter solenoid or starter switch. Therefore both sides of the ammeter and output stud of alternator should read battery voltage.

Ammeter should swing negative with lights and/or ignition on engine not running. If positive swing reverse connections to ammeter

Lights and ignition switch should power from alternator side of ammeter

I looked up NTE5809 and it is a diode, not a capacitor. The marked band at one end should go toward the alternator at #1 pin. This will jump start the alternator without reving the engine. So, now you have the advantage of a 3 wire alternator at perhaps the added cost of a one wire. It should work ok. Replace with 3 wire if and when there is a "next time". Your 1 wire alternator probably has internal connection from #2 pin to output stud. If using 3 wire connect #2 pin to output stud

That's good to know. I tried a one wire years ago on my 400, and you had to rev to about 1500 to get it to kick in, and you wouldn't do that until it warmed up, went to a 3 wire powered off my hour meter, and never looked back. My 2 SC 12 volt tractors have them too. My SC wouldn't rev high enough to energize the field, you had to be off the tractor and hold the governor open to get the higher revs. On those I just used an oil pressure switch from NAPA that closed its contacts at 8 lbs of pressure.

I believe you do not have a single post alternator if, as you mentioned, it has a 2 prong connection on the alternator case.

There is only 1 screw post on a single wire alternator, no spade terminals. As for a preference, I love the simplicity of the one wire unit. Only have to rev the engine once to excite the internal regulator- it will charge just fine at lower rpm's once excited.

I am corrected. It has the single post, and two spade terminals. The harness was a rats nest when I got her, now all the connectors are soldered and we have clean connections. I dabbed a small amount of NO-OXID "A" on the terminals for good measure. Thanks for all your insight fellows. CM
