Got the head back from shop. Exhaust valves were completely shot, springs weak and retainers worn. All new and hardened stuff for the new gas. Hope to get the clutch job finished up and joined back together this weekend so we can start putting the engine back together.

I've been pondering how you're supposed to get a torque wrench on the short bolts of the head. Can a crows foot be used?

Try to find a box end extension like the pic, open end crowsfoot will probably be too wide and may ding up your tubes, that is really soft metal, easy to deform.

Considering the running gear wear, especially the retainers, I would run the engine with the valve cover off to check the amount of oil getting up to the top deck. You need sufficient oil not only to lube the running gear but also run off down the push rod tubes to lube the cam center and aft bearings, the tappet/lobe contact, and distributor gears.

I checked this evening and a crowsfoot would kinda work, but yes is too fat and will likely damage the tubes if not being really careful. I found an 11/16 version of the "Torque box adapter" wrench online for $25 so its on the way. I probably should have just got a whole set of them for the cost of another, but that set was full chinese and had bad reviews for being too thick.
