Going to look at this tractor. Does not have Eagle hitch or hydraulics. I think price is fair for this area if it's in good shape. Really do not have a need for it but would use it at plow days, maybe pull it once in a while. What should I look for? Any common lurking problems with these old guy's? My Dad started farming with one in the 40's, it was long gone by the time I came around so don't know anything about them. What ya think guys?

D's are pretty solid. One thing I look for is play in the bevel gear shaft. If they get loose or the bearings go out, the shaft may get spit out the side of the transmission. I have a DC "parts" tractor like that and got my DV as a "parts tractor" too because the bearings were out on the same shaft. Grab the belt pulley and see if there's end play in that shaft... shouldn't be more than a few thousandths.

Also check the radiator and water pump. The pump may leak out the weep hole and they can be a handful to replace. And if there is junk in the radiator, you may have junk in the water jacket around the sleeves and to clean that out correctly you're looking at pulling the head (at least to get that out of there. It builds over time and if you're looking to pull or plow with it you'll probably want to know it can run hard without overheating. It's a 70 year old mechanical beast so half a bucket of rust is common in the water jacket (and scoring on #4 if you work it hard... BTDT).

It looks like a narrow wheelbase tractor. Check to see if it's a DO or DV (orchard or vineyard, stamped in the SN) as they made less of them.

Good looking D. I would say it is a standard D. Does not look narrow which would be a dv. In Oregon or NW a decent unrestored D , tops would be 1500. More like 1000 to 1200, 1300. Lucky to get 200o-2500 for a restored D. Dick

I'll agree with the Standard D comment. It's too low to be a DC-4. Not many differences between a DO and a D, but this one is lacking the hood scoop that would have come with a DO. It also looks like it has been repainted at some point. Hydraulics can be added, but it takes a little work and a donor tractor. Around here I would expect $1500 as a decent price for the machine as it sits, $1000 if they really wanted to sell it.

Good luck.

Thanks for the comments and info, especially on the end play on belt pulley. Will make it down there this weekend.
