2470-504 dilemma solved....

The last couple years the 2470 has been getting harder to start...even needing a whiff of ether at 40 degrees. This spring when turning the engine over it would sound like a weak cylinder, I bought the tractor in the early 90s and overhauled it with all Case parts 4-5 years later. With the weak sounding cylinder I took my infrared thermometer and read the exhaust temps at each cylinder after starting.Number 3 showed 91 degrees while the others were 135. Took the hood off and valve covers yesterday and found both valves tight on #3. Adjusted all the valves(8 were tight) and put it back together. Doesn't even make a full turn and it is running. Guess it doesn't hurt to run the top end now and then. Glad it wasn't more serious.

Moral of the story is I took my own advice....lot of times if someone has a slight miss, I tell them to check valve clearance...sorry to ramble.

"Tight" valves are often a sign of seat recession or valve damage, and it only gets worse as time goes on.

If they were tight enough it didn't start/run well, it certainly wasn't doing the valves any good.

That also concerned me but the heads were done by a very good shop and had new seats where needed and new valves and springs. Keep in mind this was done in about 96...21 years ago. Having owned over the road semis for almost 30 years, I have seen clearances change on them over time also when running the overhead on Cummins and Detroit engines. I think it will be fine as I checked with the infrared therm. this afternoon and all cylinders were identical on heat numbers.

If you had found all of them tight I would say you have issues, (valve stretch from shutting down with high exhaust temps), one head tells me you were just a bit off setting it all those years ago I would not worry unless it does it again on the same head then I would yank that head and replace valves betting you are fine now for another 20-25 years

They never get shut down hot and while planting wheat the pyrometer was reading only 400-450 degrees. The intake valve on #3 had very little clearance and some of the others were tight but had clearance. I'll check them again after the beans are all planted just for peace of mind.
