Injector pump options for Case 585

Posted earlier on fuel leaking into lube oil.
Replaced pump shaft seal. Seal available from NAPA...cross it from the CASEIH 3078355R2. Pump shaft a bit loose. I lightly staked the edge of the bushing all around to reduce the play, but of course that's a band-aid. I don't know how long the new seal will last.

So it runs and my client will be watching oil level. It does smoke more now and almost has a slight occasional miss. Since I firmly believe I maintained the timing by aligning and marking everything, I think I have an air leak...acts that way. I'll replace the copper seals on the plumbing, but if it continues to smoke, are there any other ideas that might apply here?

BUT, the pump will need work or replacement. D&C Diesel offers a CAV replacement for this engine to eliminate the Bosch VA4, as they are getting scarce.

I owned a B275 that had a Bosch VA from a Peugeot, but originally the B275s had CAV pumps.

So what are the options? I'd consider resealing this pump myself, having done a VE but can't find a seal kit for the VA. I know the front bushing will need replacing and a machineshop precision reamer. For this client, this is the main tractor, so I need to do something foolproof.

Bosch has the bushings available now where years ago they didn't, and housing needed replaced. I have both bushing sizes for VA and VE pumps, and the tools to size them after installation. Recently repaired a VW VE pump that the bushings were really worn, no longer keeping the drive shaft centered for the seal to live. Long as a VA pump does not start hard when hot they can be repaired and calibration reset. Just did an IH 884 with several leaks, shaft bushings were OK on that housing.

Great news if I go that route. The tractor starts well, so the rotor and that are probably ok. Then, next, where do I source a seal kit? I just learned that the kit available through Case IH is no longer available,,,if indeed that was the right kit...for a D239 engine.

At some point if I do the repair, I'll expect to just reseal it, and avoid calibration...is that realistic? Otherwise I'll need to go the whole rebuild scene. I'll probably ask you for bushing specs, availability and dimensions for a shop to finish to. I'm not clear if you're just a most valuable member here or a vendor/supplier?

Thanks much!

A DGK124 Bosch gskt kit for CR pumps & DGK125 for BR.
The screws on those pumps are touchy & its easy to get the levers off 1 notch.. Not calibrating one is not recommended.. but the customer is always right.. Theres no way to warranty a pump that hasn't been calibrated..
The person who built it has no way of knowing if its right..
Theres a HUGE difference in, it runs ok, and it being calibrated to spec.. but its your call.

So with enough rebuild data and pictures and documentation, care in marking, indexing and leaving stuff alone, it should be possible to not screw the settings up....right?

Found the VA4 CR kit DGK124 at http://superiordiesel.net/product-category/bosch/?orderby=date

Thanks!

I wouldn't tell anyone that doesn't have years of experience, to cut their teeth on a VA pump..
I'v seen seasoned veterans screw them up.. advance piston in backwards, transfer pumps in backwards, levers on wrong.. just to many "tricks of the trade" to get one done properly..
I'll bet ya 20.00 SD doesn't have the kit in stock BUT "can order it" for you.. they never do..
THEN your stuck w/ a shipping charge to get it TO THEM [25.00] and another to get it TO YOU..[25.00] all for a 14.00 kit..been there done that..
Best to find someone that has it IN STOCK.. but I guess a phone call couldn't hurt..
Good luck.

Oh yes, seen the same thing too many times. What's bad is when a pump that has few parts available comes in with a broken critical part, making it un-repairable. Or just want you to test a pump that's been apart, and "think" it's together correctly. Sorry, not on my stand. Had that happen awhile back on an early Dodge VE pump, after asking a few questions, he gave the OK to tear it back down and start over. Had several problems he "thought" was OK.

I see it all the time on Stanadyne/RoosaMaster pumps.. cuz someone on the internet said they can be repaired w/ a 16.00 gasket kit..
