I have a Case 870 and the PTO will not work. Do you have any ideas on where to look for instructions that will help me diagnosis the
problem ?

(quoted from post at 18:26:39 04/10/17) I need to add that the PTO will not disengage.

not at all familiar with the 70-series. The obvious I would look for would be something in the linkages broken, bent or missing. Maybe broken forks inside the unit. On the older Eagle hitch units if you got the clutch plates too hot they would warp and stay in contact and not want to completely turn off.

a place to start maybe.

The PTO in your tractor is actuated by a hydraulic clutch pack and stopped with a spring loaded brake when hyd. pressure is not applied. After checking the cable that comes down from the PTO lever to the spool and making sure the spool is traveling full stroke, disconnect the 3/8"line feeding the PTO at the rear of tractor and with the lever off, start the tractor. The PTO should NOT turn. If it does turn either the clutch discs in the pack are warped or the brake is broken/worn out. You will then have to remove the whole rear housing of the tractor and make needed repairs.

Thank you for the advice. I will give this a try. This tractor is a different 870 as it is a Case-David Brown. It belonged to my Dad and we lost him to cancer. I would really like to get it fixed up and fully functional.
Thanks Terry

870s were all built the same. When Case acquired DB they just put a DB sticker on the radiator side panels. That makes your tractor a 72-73. Case changed to white sheet metal in 1974.
