I can't identify the truck in the 5th picture down. Sure would love to drive it though. In the 7th picture down, are they hoisting those bales up there by hand??!!

Steve,

How fortunate you are to have those family treasures. Thanks for sharing them with us. I have always wanted a Plymouth pickup truck, an old neighboring farmer had one when I was a kid.

John, they are using what was called a gin pole. It was set up on a pickup with a engine and winch. The pole was tall enough to reach the top of the load. Two men loaded one stacking the other ran the loader. The winch used a rope with a L shaped spear that was stuck in the bale. The man on the stack had two ropes one ran the clutch on the winch the other was on the end of the spear to pull it back down. Two men could load a truck & trailer in under a hour. I hope this paints a good enough picture. Steve

Sure enjoyed your pictures Steve, lots of history on the family, and you can see the hard work they did. Thanks for sharing this.

It belonged to Roth Bros. they farmed next door. I believe they built them in there shop. Steve
