885 Newby...... Starting Issue

Iceberg

Last spring I bought a 1979 885 at an auction and used it off and on all summer long. Just before winter set in, I went to move the tractor and the it seemed like the ignition switch was having an issue and couldn't get the starter to engage. How do I take the dash cover off to check the wires, connections, and either the fuse or safety switch. I have a owners manual and service manual and neither one tells me how to do this.

In 2013 I picked up an old 9N, and the guys on this forum helped me greatly in getting that thing running...So why not try this forum on the 885. Thanks in advance

Your problem sounds a bit like my 1977 885. When you are trying to start it do you have the clutch pushed down? Occasionally when I go to start mine after it's been sitting for a while it'll only "click" but not turn over. This is with the clutch pushed down. Release the clutch and for some reason it'll start. Normally it works okay but it's done this for years. The neutral safety switch works properly, i.e. when in gear it won't start. Just a little quirk from the "Prince of Darkness" electrical system. :?

Iceberg, check the wiring harness plug on the right side. About 8 wires, sometimes they will get a break in them and will act just like you describe. Have a 990 acting like that right now. Take tractor out of gear and see if starter turns over by shorting main terminal to small inside terminal. That will tell you that it is in that connector plug. Good luck.

Clutch released or pushed down, not in gear, not even a click.
Maybe I will try it with clutch engaged, in gear. :D

Thanks

I need to check out all the wiring and probably need to replace the wiring harness, none of the gauges work. All of the lights are missing.

On our 1190 I have wiggle the gear shifter quickly when it wont start. Its been that way for years. Nick

Start at the beginning. Is the battery up to full charge? Are the wires at the starter solenoid connected/loose/corroded? Broken wires anywhere? Don't go pulling the dash apart until you check the simple stuff first.

Replaced the ignition switch, now I have power to starter. May have to replace the solenoid, there seems to be a dead spot. I need to turn the key off and on before it engages the starter

Battery was fully charged and the wiring was good, had to replace a couple of connectors and a blown fuse. Tried starting before replacing the ignition switch and nothing. With the old switch, I wasn't getting a reading on the multimeter to the starter, with new switch, I am reading the same voltage as the battery at the starter.

Next question, Do I need to pull the starter to change out the solenoid, or can I do it while on the engine? The service manual I have doesn't say anything about that, it only tells me how to rebuild the starter.

Just so you are fully aware of what you are getting into:

Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone. Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb. Joseph Lucas invented the Short Circuit.
