need advice on starting my 500 case diesel that has been in the shed 3 yrs?Concerned about that injection pump,so I don't do any damage as I am planning on pulling it to start.Any help is very much appreciated!!Dave A

Have a Case PSB pump apart now with head parts damaged that only set 6 months since it last ran. IF the plunger IS stuck it MAY break first time engine is turned over, doesn't matter by starter or pulling. On the one I have in for repair the plunger isn't broken, but the gear internal guide that turns the plunger is.

If you don't have one get a manual and bleed the fuel system. Case recommended bleeding the fuel system if the tractor had sat for a while and I had to do that to get mine to start after it had sat for years. Curious why are you pull starting it?

DO NOT pull it to start it!!!! If the pump is stuck you WILL break it!! Best way is to remove the pump and see if you can turn it by hand,If not have a pump shop service it for you.I have had this experience twice in years past, parts are very hard to get for that pump

Starter is bad so will need to pull to get it to our shop.If I take the injecter off,how do you time it to get it back on?Da

Roger is right, DON'T EVEN TRY to set pump timing, remove it as is where it is. Timing can be done later, not that hard. What IS hard is finding PSB parts..

Richard: Are any parts available for that Pump? Several years ago, I was told that many of those parts were being re-pro'd in South America.

Dave, I repair/rebuild my share of PSBs. Turning this pump over with a wrench when removed can break the quil, or snap the drive. Just think how much stronger the starter is, let alone pulling this tractor. I have a guy who is building new plungers for these heads, but it is much cheaper to not break it in the first place. Pull your pump and have someone who knows what they are doing look at it. Parts are getting hard to find and pricy, so Dont just trust Bubba Jr. or MR. I can fix most anything. Chances are good this pump has some age on it so after setting it is likely you will have a leak anyways. Good luck, If you have any questions feel free to give me a Call. Al 231/757/0064

Being kept inside, IF the tractor was running okay 3 years ago and was shut off normally---IF there is now still fuel in the tank---IF the fuel lines and filters have not been opened in any way--IF no condensation in the bottom of the fuel filter--someone please tell me where corrosion would come from to cease up any part of the injection pump. Unlike gasoline, diesel is an oil and not likely to gum up.

If it ran out of fuel when parked, you might have air and corrosion in the fuel system. Then do as others suggested below.

If it were my tractor and IF not ran out of fuel when parked and the lines and filters not dirturbed-- I would not worry about damaging the injector pump. You decide.
