Early RPS34 C1 Question

Been slowly rebuilding an RPS34 in an early 970. Have come across another question I would appreciate some advice on. Please understand I am a worry wart, and this mighht be a silly question. Hopefully it is.

From looking at the diagrams, manuals, etc, on the EARLY powershift, there really is nothing supporting the C1 reaction sun gear except the 3 planet gears with which it engages. The later ones look to be supported internally by the input shaft. With that said, mine is the EARLY version. I have the refreshed unit all bolted in to the torque tube, and it just seems like the C1 sun gear is looser than you would think is acceptable...almost hanging down a bit by the weight of the disks. See red marks on photo.

Does the rotation of the C1 sungear, and the action of the planet gears on the sun gear cause it to self center itself? It just seems like it will wobble around, possibly wearing the disks, plates and teeth funny?

The planetary seemed fine when i had it out. The gear teeth all had little if any wear evident, and the bearings seemed to be tight as well. Same with the C1 sun. Do I need to revisit something inside, or is this normal and rotation will hold it center between the planets?

I did search the archives and find 1 thread with discussion about the same issue between 2 gentlemen, but the question was never really resolved.

Thanks very much as always for any advice.

The sagging down when stationary is normal, when the spinning begins they must center themselves. That is why they are balanced. If the gears are in good condition all will be fine. Rod.

Rod,
I sure appreciate the response. That's what I was hoping to hear.
I see below you ventured to NYC? Hope you have a good visit and a safe trip home!
Thanks,
Darren

Looking at your picture and pondering over it. Unless there is a reflection and I'm missing something I don't believe you have the C-1 clutch assembled properly. It appears to me that the plate isn't splined to or attached to the sun gear. From the picture it looks like another plate is directly behind it as well. That would put two cinder plates back to back and that wouldn't be good. Looks like you have a power-shift prior to trans. S/N 10063614 but not a real early one with only one cinder and one steel plate. Yours should have two cinders and two steel plates. Both cinder plates have to be splined to the sun gear and have a steel plate separating them.

The splines of the disk cannot be seen engaging the C1 sun gear due to the spirolock ring set in a groove ahead of this sintered disk on to the C1 sun gear. There is another spirolock (original) on the back side of the same disk. The sun gear and 1 disk were made as a balanced assembly at the factory. The disk was retained by a spirolcok ring on either side of it and brazed at the factory preventing one from replacing the disk. I wanted a fresh disk. so rather than buying the $990 assembly from Fiat, and after learnings from 1370Rod, I cut off the front ring, replaced the disk, and installed a new ring. Had a heck of a time finding this ring. Case don't sell it. GL Huyett does though.

I understand some of these C1 sun assemblies use a hub and rivets to fasten the disk to a hub.

There is a steel plate behind this first disk, you can see the gap inside of the hole in the disk. You cannot see the steel, as it's flat surface is only wide enough to mate with the sintered part of the disk, so you can't see it in that hole. And there is a second steel behind the second sintered disk.

I am starting to think I should have (and maybe still will) line the holes in the 2 disks up for balancing purposes.

Thanks for pointing that out..I sure welcome advice...I'd be cranky if I had to split this thing again.
