Been trying to adjust the fan belt but can't get it.I've loosened the bolts, there are only 2,looks like one is missing.Just wondering if there's an easy way.Another question, can the radiator be removed without taking the fan off?May have to do that in order to figure what the problem is.Thanks for any responses.Ron

Your probably not going to have much luck adjusting in place. My question is why are you adjusting it. The B belts used on DC tractors are loose by design. A tight belt will trash the water pump bearing fast. Turn your magneto switch off, trans out of gear. Standing on the generator side pull the fan with your left hand. Does the fan turn the engine? If the engine turns some and then belt slips, its probably coming up on compression. The fact that it will turn the motor over at all indicates the belt is probably tight enough. If your tractor has starting to get hot lately, it could be a number of things. Low coolant, plugged rediator, ignition timing or maybe lean carb. good luck, chuck.

Thanks Chuck, but the belt is so loose you can almost spin the fan.My question was how to adjust it. I'm going to put an alternator on it and there's no way it would even begin to turn it.

Ron,

Yes, you can remove the radiator w/o taking the fan off. Two bolts on the bottom, two bolts at the water neck and the temperature gauge line. Be careful to remove the drain pipe as well. Your fan adjusting assembly is most likely rusted in place so it won't move. It should be fairly easy to figure it out once you get it off and can soak it and you can replace the bolt that's missing at that time. Not an uncommon problem on these old D series. Also, that radiator is about all one old guy like me can handle. Don

Thanks Don,thats what I wanted to know, will put on new belt and be able to put on a gen belt at the same time.I will use an engine hoist to lift the radiator.Ron
