Case 585 fuel in the lube oil

Client calld me to figure out why his 1980's 585 oil level is way high...
He was worried about coolant getting into the pan via seal or gasket leak. Coolant was low, but I doubted that as a source. Oil was not milky.

I drained 5.5 gallons from the crankcase, no sign of coolant, but oil was thin and smelled of fuel.

I changed oil, (~3 gallon capacity, right?), drained the filter, and advised him to check the level frequently and quit if it rises dramatically....like an inch over the mark. I hope to get an idea of how severe the leak is.

Now, where is this coming from? Engine is smoky, but that's on cold startup. Client says it's running fine when warmed up, so injectors are probably ok.

So, injector pump seal is all I can figure. Bosch VA4 pump.

Any advice on further checks, ideas on r&r pump and seal replacement?

Thanks.
Colin

Most likely the injection pump drive shaft seal, last pump I repaired the seal was cracked, over time they get hard and brittle. May need the bushings replaced too if worn and not keeping the shaft centered. Best in the long run to reseal the complete pump, head seals and other seals usually start leaking soon too.

Agreed on the front seal r&r.

I'm hesitant at this point to reseal the pump....doing that for my 89 jetta which wouldn't run, but I'd hesitate to go that far on this client's pump.

Plan is to remove pump, r&r seal and reassemble. If there's a further issue down the road, at least I will have rehearsed the basics.

Re: the removal, etc., I copied a web page "585 Injector pump rebuild and Timing" on Red Power, and assume it will guide me all the way.

Thanks for the reply, and if you know of additional links to guides, I'd appreciate it.

Removed pump after timing the engine and marking the gear mesh point. Noticed the pump gear was "loose" when removing it. I also found the front bushing worn and loose, the probable cause of the leaking seal.

Not really willing to send this pump out for my client... Is the bushing easy to replace w/o a complete pump reseal?

UPDATE...

New seal lasted the year, then this Spring, again, beginning to leak fuel into the lube oil. Removed pump, had it resealed, checked by dieseltech, very quick and affordable, installed and runs better than ever.
