Considering I have 2 2290's one running one not. The local case IH dealer told me up to $15k to rebuild what I believe is a seized crank from spun bearing. They said something about side thrust blocks and needing a new crank and blocks and that means out of frame rebuild.
Can one of you who actually know. Explain this to me. I have not yet pulled the oil pan to check any conditions.
I would actually like to repair it and either use it, hopefully or sell it.

If the crank has to come out. The tractor has to be split. usually a crank can be sent off once out of the tractor to grind down the journals to the next smaller size that removes the damage. Usually in increments on .010 inch. It is possible that the crank could be damaged beyond repair. i.e. the journal would be too small after grinding to be usable.

A seized crank is never good, more often than not the stuck brgs have heated the crank blue on the bad journal and welded them self to the crank. Most of the time the
crank is wore beyond repair. If it is a main brg then there is indeed block damage also. The 22's with the small journal crank have had these issues. Will be high dollar
fix, if you could do all the labor yourself would help in savings. If you love the tractor fix it, but getting a different tractor could save some dollars also, Rod.

I have a complete rebuilt 2290 long block to sell, new pistons and sleeves, reground crank, rebuilt heads with new valves, complete from valve covers to oil pan,no fuel pump,or manifold and turbo, call if interested 715-308-2163

Everyone has given you good advise, but Please pull the pan first and take a look. Even if it means pulling and re-installing the bearing caps one at a time.

It may not be that bad.

If the whole thing is junk slip the pan back on look for another engine. One of the commenters as an engine. Take your time do a little searching, then you can make the best possible decision.

Many of us have been down this road, it sucks when you loose an engine but you need the best possible information first.

I had a 930 seized up while idling. No damage except one rod bearing slight damaged. I agree inspect the bearings and go from there. Maybe you can remove the crank without disturbing the pistons and heads. Up side down of course.

The previous owner could probably shed light on the operating conditions when it seized. That would tell a lot.

Thank you for the advice, I will be pulling the pan and a few bearings, I will report back might take me awhile and I also might be looking at the long block option from above. There is also a guy about 50 miles from me who has a 504 out of a 1370 with reported 5400 hours on it he wants $3,400 if I remember correctly.
Problem is I do not have the tools need to split a tractor that big myself. So that's kinda a final option but still could happen.
