stupid question??

It would be advisable, since the VACs didn't have independent ptos and will propel your tractor forward until the cutter stops turning, unless you slip the tranny into neutral. Make sure that your shaft doesn't bottom out and bind up when raising and lowering with the ORC attached.

If you're in true brush, walk it first. Any obstruction will take a tooth off your large pto gear. I
probably went thru half a dozen gears before I figured that one out. Also, I had 34" wheels on mine, it
geared it up kinda high for real brush. I hitched mine to the arms, and no 3rd link, it followed on the
rear tire which kept it from scalping or raising if the front end dipped. However, one time, while
crossing a dead furrow, on an angle, the mower deck caught a tire lug, and that yanked that side of the
deck up and it broke the mounting ears off the cylinder housing where it bolts to top of the axle housing
(still have it here, with the broken ears if anyone needs a parts unit). I then started using one of my
SC's with live power. Probably the 34" wheels were the biggest issue in the years I used the VAC. Just
some thoughts that may save some grief. I then mounted a 6' Woods belly mower to it, and that worked
like a champ (no brush though)
 
Yes you should use an ORC since the PTO is transmission driven so when you push the clutch pedal down the brush hog can/will try to push you a good bit farther
