Cracks in blocks and heads of Case engins

Jon posted pics of cracks between cylinders on his 1030. Those cracks were not caused by ether!!! There are basically two reasons for cracks between cylinders. (1) improper torqueing sequence when installing heads . (2) freeze up in cold weather.
Cracks in heads can be caused by improper use of ether, but unlikely. Back when the 30 series tractors were introduced to farmers, tractors were rated by how big a plow they could pull. Dealers and farmers alike, weighted the tractors heavily so they couldn't spin out and lugged the pi$$ out of them at lower RPMS, thus overheating the heads. These engines at the time were antiquated. Air intake and exhaust were on the same side and heat build up was inevitable. The fuel cells prolonged the combustion cycle through a longer stroke of the engine, and thus containing more heat in the engine and putting more demand on a limited cooling system.
Cool down after lugging was necessary.
The power cells required precision fitting to prevent blow by between the halves, and erosion of the cylinder head into the water jacket. Fuel cell haves not properly mated was a major cause of compression leaking into the cooling system.
Poor injector pattern also contributed to head failures. See pic 1 of the gouge between the valves that was eating into the head from a poorly functioning injector and a blow through into the water jacket, from miss mated fuel cell halves that was leaking into that cylinder. Pic. 2 shows a crack between the valve ports, which I would attribute to prolonged lugging/over heating, and improper cool down procedures.
In my opinion these failures were caused by a false assumption that one could lug a Case 30 series tractor hour after hour without consequences, and poor rebuild practices when a problem occurred.

Loren: You make some very good points, but look at the valve recession on that head and tell me they got it started below 50 degrees without ether.
