Case 430 rear wheel locking up.

My grandfather bought a Case 430 diesel brand new in 1966 or 1967. He quit farming and my dad brought the tractor from where they had farmed and sold it to his brother in law, my uncle. I think that was around 71 or so. My uncle, and now my cousins have used the tractor ever since and now want to replace it. They offered it to me and I think I am going to get it, but they told me that the rear left ( I think ) brake locks up randomly for no apparent reason as is pretty scary. they said it seems to happen more often of you are going on a sidehill where it is leaning to the left. IS this a serious problem, or something simple to fix? I'm kind of nervous about tearing into it as my whole childhood we had a case or two split in the shop... not that they broke over and over, but my dad never had time to work on them so it took years, or decades to get them back together. I don't want a situation like that!

Anyway, thanks!

Not a big problem. Take the brake apart and clean the discs well with a random orbit sander and replace the springs on the actuator discs, and clean out the sockets and balls, and lightly lube the balls. If it is a newer model and has the actuator bands do the same to them, and you should be fine. I have one that does the same thing, and I need to do the same thing to mine. Also make sure the brake return spring is pulling the pedal up all the way.

so what exactly is the problem then? Is it a combination of all those things or is one thing in particular jamming up? I will have to find a parts breakdown and figure out how to work on the brakes. I have not worked on one of these sine my dad sold his last one about 25 years ago, and then I was only handing tools and wishing I was somewhere else....

Go to the CaseIH website, click on parts, then type in the model and find the brake system in the folders shown. It will give you a pretty good picture of what you will find once you get in there. Lots of help on this forum, ask and learn. gobble

This is what you will find initially when you pull the cover off. Follow the instructions from the other fellows in this post. Take a measurement of the adjuster nut and shaft . Let that be a reference when you reassemble. I will say a service manual would be your best friend before you start. It would be a wise investment .CM

The brakes are not hard to work on. Follow Adirondack case guy's suggestions. Below is a link to the correct online parts diagram for a 66 or 67 430. You may have a broken spring causing the
brakes to self energize. Nick

Thanks everyone. I will pull the brakes apart as soon as I get a chance to go pick up the tractor.
