Progress on my 1030

Was raining today so this afternoon I went over and started on my new to me 1030. Wanted to see if the engine was salvageable. Sadly, that is not Going to happen. The block is litterally broke in half. It's cracked right down the middle between all the pistons. The sleeves don't show much wear and the crank looks good. The mains were replaced in 72 but the rods are originals. The good news is both heads still on it look good even tho one is pitted some. After I get this tractor running they will be for sale unless I need them. Going to be some other parts for sale too.

Anyone know if the spindle arms for this front are available? These are welded on. I would like to keep this set back front, but will need to do some fixing to keep it.

I don't know if I call those cracks a death sentence yet Jon, I've seen a lot of engines with similar issues that work fine

those cracks wont hurt a thing. seen many engines cracked between the sleeves. the head gasket seals that. why are u taking it apart?

Was blowing water out of the exhaust, when they pulled the head they found this and quit. It's been sitting like that in the shed for 25 years.

Jon,

That looks like one heck of a project but it is dooable!!! Is there stuff in the water passages in the head? It looks funny.

Good luck!

Eli

better pull the other head, as that crack wont push water out the exaust pipe.impossible.

The guy I bought it from pulled that head, he says it's in the shed but I haven't found it yet. I know that's not how the water got in the exhaust, I'm just wondering if the cracks are an issue. I thought originally that the block was junk, but some have said those cracks don't really matter. I do have another block if neccessary, but was hoping to not use it for this tractor.

Jon: Those cracks are serious, most likely they go thru the counterbores which support the sleeve. A crack running 90 degrees to these, or side to side are not so serious, but cracks running in between from 1 sleeve to the other, such as these are very serious. Looking at the valve recession in the head, I assume she was a hard starter, yada-yada-yada, ether was the culprit.

As DKase said, as long as bottom counter bores are good, I wouldn't worry too much about the cracks in the top of the block. The fire rings on the head gaskets seal on the sleeve flanges, not the block. Just make sure the sleeve flanges are not cracked, and the flange protrusion is correct.
