Straight piping a 930 any harm??

I have a 930 comfort king diesel I just had it overhauled in june . I found a chrome stack when was haying I 29 this year and wanted to put it on the 930.
Anyways a few people told me now that I shouldn't it will drop a valve or score a piston just wondering what say you guys.
I think Casecollectorsc had a straight pipe on a 1175?
Anyways not a big deal I just like the way it sounds straight piped.
Thanks loren

Have you ever heard a natural aspirated diesel with a straight pipe? Sounds like someone farting in a culvert. A turbo charged engine sound good with a nice whistle.

jicaseman89. Had a straight pipe on dad s 1175 & yellow 1370.Never was a problem. Both sound good. Wish I had both tractors.

Just make sure to idle/cool down a little longer with
the straight pipe. Known to crack heads on 30 when
too hot of heads have cold air come down the
exhaust. Just my experience

Some Tractors sound good with a straight pipe and others sound terrible. Put a pipe on my 930. That lasted about an hour. Sounded like crap. Put the muffler back on and got that nice mellow tone back.

When I started farming in 68 with a 64 Western Special 930, first thing I did was take the muffler off and put a straight pipe on. Only thing
it hurt was my hearing. Left ear doesn't hear so well. 1170 has a straight pipe but the turbo mellows the sound...not so harsh.

I agree! We put a straight pipe on a 400 Super Diesel and it sounded terrible. On the 600 it sounds great. Don

Lol I guess its a young dumb kid thing idk never really thought of it a friend of mine bought a 930 with a six speed engine was stuck muffler shot he got it going and straight piped it and I just liked the way it sounded
Plus I had this free chrome stack its 6 inch I reduced it down and yes farting in a culvert covers it.
But with a smaller pipe like he has would sound the same I just wanted opinions thanks guys

Casecollectorsc I like the looks of that 1170 do those 451s in the 70s series start better in the winter? More or less like a 504? My 30 series do not like the cold plunged in over night and oil pan heater plus manifold heat they always start but nothing like the 504s

I knew a guy that had an 830 CK. He priced a muffler and thought
they were too high. He took the tall air cleaner pipe off an early
830 and used that for his exhaust. It was loud! He ran it that way
for ten years or more. Till he died from cancer.

Most proponents are no doubt young guys that haven't lost their hearing, ....yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a straight pipe on my 401 diesel and loved the sound. But as an old guy who's already lost too much hearing, I wear hearing protection on all my tractors, always, muffler or not....

I had one on 930 for years never had a problem. The pipe was long enough to get close to the top of the cab and people commented it sounded great but I don't like the sound on a four cylinder.

Just a note it also had a rain cap on the pipe which may have prevented cool air entering the engine.

When rebuilt my 931 I took a cup saw that just fit into the inlet and cut the baffle out of the muffler. It doesn't have that sharp rap to it and sounds really nice and mellow with the oversized extended outlet.

I can not think of any damage a straight pipe on a diesel would cause. But on the other hand I can not think of anything you would gain by installing one other than more
noise. I guess it is a owners right to run what they want too. I do not care for the sound of a pipe on non turboed diesel. My hearing is not what it once was and would
recommend ear protection for the operator of a non muffled engine. Rod.
