Hello I bought a 1070 last fall , I have IH 4 - 16 plow that I can add another bottom onto I live on heavy clay hills should I stay with the 4 bottom or would it handle 5 , The tractor has 18.4 38 radial tires full of fluid . Thanks Bryan

In clay hills I'd stick with the 4 16s. Need a he!! of a deck of weight on the front too to keep it down if it is a semi mount plow.
Good luck

I see no reason a 1070 would not handle a 5-16 semi-mount plow if it is a strong 1070 and plow is set correct. I pull a 4-16 with a 870 anywhere you want to go,clay, gumbo, hills, etc. The 870 dyno's at 87 Hp., I have 740 lbs. front weight , 18.4X34 bias on rear and draft-control system works and is set correctly.Your 1070 will easily Dyno. 105-110 if in good condition, with 800 lbs. or so front weights, your tires, a 1070 is 7" longer and heavier and your draft-control system working you should be able to pull it fine.
With that said there are places in the world that pull extremely hard and maybe you are in one of those areas. Just go ask one of the older guys from your area that used to plow all of the time and ask how big of a plow they pulled with a 110 hp. tractor and there will be your answer.
1070's are tough old tractors.

I would try the 4 bottom and see how the 1070 handles it.Should be able to pull it in 2nd gear 2nd powershift. I pull a oliver 4 bottom with a harrow with my 1070 and i would'nt want any bigger plow. We have hilly ground.

The plough your tractor will pull depends more on your dirt than most other thing . If it is too dry it will make for a hard pull , too wet no traction . If the soil has been packed down during wet times , it will be tough to plough . I can pull 5 bottoms with a 100 hp in most of my ground ,but I have some fields were the tractor will come to a complete stop, and pull the front end up . Clay ground is always a challenge to farm. I would stay with the 4 , unless you are ploughing hundreds of acres , you won't take much more time .

Dad bought a new 1070 in 74. He bought 6-16 case plow to go with it. It was ok until we got to the "new" farm with steep clay hills. It wouldn't handle that. Dad borrowed a deere 5-16 from his BIL and used it on that farm. I think he traded down to a 5-16 the next year. We were pulling 4-16 with a Farmall 706 gas before that, but not on that farm.

I bought a new 1070 and 5x16's Case semi mount plow in the fall of 74. The 1070 would pull the plow 4 MPH most of the time but sometimes I was down to 3 MPH to 3.5 MPH in the lower areas with good black soil. It had 18.4-38's full of fluid and a few weights on front but I don't remember how many.

While it would likely pull a 5x16, I would stick to the 4x16 plow as your tractor is 40 yrs old and with metal fatigue I would take it nice and easy with the old girl. And since you already own that size of plow it will be a very low cost unit that way.
