I have a 310 e with 148b gas engine with 3 bolt starter. I was wondering if a 188 diesel is a direct fit

No it isn't. 188 is longer, the radiator is different and a few other things are different

Is the bellhousing the same? The rest i can work with

Yes the bell housing is the same. I think they used a shorter driveshaft for the diesel but I don't have a 310C book to see if it even came with a diesel.

I'm not sure on the radiator , but if you look, I bet you will find that the frame rails are already drilled in the front to mount the 188 in place. The 188 is 1-3/8" longer.
