I decided to get around to replacing the seals on the bearing carrier on 400 today. The bearing carrier was just a little stubborn, it's only been on there for 62 years. Tomorrow will get it all cleaned up and press two new seals in . Very little wear on the bearing carrier shaft. A little crocus cloth and it should clean up rather nicely .thanks to John Saeli all parts are still available.

Take a 20 oz. pop bottle and cut the ends off and slit down the side. Wrap around the splines before sliding the seal assy. back on...keeps from cutting the seal.

Saw a little trick on the internet a couple weeks ago. Take a empty water bottle and cut the top off. Slip it over the gear splines and the heat it with a heat gun/hair dryer. Acts like shrink wrap. Give it a try on a 2x2 if you want to check it out first. The wire and 2x4 support is exactly how I did mine several years ago. DO NOT FORGET TO PUT THOSE ULTRA THIN SHIMS BACK. or you'll get some extra practice twisting bolts. BTDT have a great weekend. gobble

It could be helpful to cut the head off a couple of cheep 6 or 8 inch bolts what ever length you need it will help ya line it up and also free up both hands to guide the brake shaft in.

Guess what! I just came from the grocery and they don't sell the 20oz pop bottles anymore. Sounds as if they will be showing up on the Saeli website .What do think John,$2.00 a bottle EMPTY. HEE!

No need to support the shaft with wire and a 2x4 if you lock the brake on the opposite side, keeps the shaft right up. That trick works on all the Case trannys |I have ever worked on.

Chuck!! Actually Chris has enough recyclables around here that we could throw them in for free!! Usually the seal surface area is a larger OD than the splines, and the splines are not the culprit in cut seals, it is when the seal rides over the shoulder between the splines & the seal surface. Especially on the Rock Isle tractors, where it is a sharp 90 edge. Looks like there might be some champher on your 400.

I appreciate that, that will come in handy when I roll to the other side. The bearing cone has a light amount of oxidation ,but will have minimal affect going forward. Thanks! CM

Chuck,

Bummer on the no pop bottles. I just wrapped duct tape around the splines when I did mine. Works pretty slick. Good luck!
