Sometime around the mid 80's I ordered a ring gear for a 1070 flywheel. The dealer for what ever reason ordered in 2 and I agreed to buy the 2cd one thinking ah what the heck I will eventually use the extra one anyway. Well that took about 30 years as I need one today. Curious what it cost me back then and what a new one is worth today. As it turns out there was surprisingly little difference. Back then it would have cost me around $150 and today a little over $180. Sure wish all the rest of the parts had only increased that amount. Rod.

I'm not much into "brand bashing" and while I lean a bit to the GREEN side I have or have had tractors by a wide variety of manufacturers.

DEERE always gets bashed for high-priced parts, so just for giggles, I looked up a starter ring gear for a 4430, comparable in size to the 1070.

Here's what I found...

Part Details

Part Number: R28811 Part Price: $89.91

Description: Ring Gear - RING GEAR
Package Quantity: 1
Alternative Part
A-R28811 Flywheel - FLYWHEEL STARTER RING - $71.93

Looks like FIAT may be a bit greedy, after all!

OK Bob, I goofed on my post heading , it should have read- A reasonably priced part from Fiat. I don't want to compare their pricing to almost anyones, knowing most of the time they will get beat, LOL. But Deere does deserve a bit of bashing also, I have gone to them for parts and yes most of the time they do charge more because of that deer on the box. Rod.

Hello Rod,

I must say I'm surprised by the price being so close. My son and I have a running joke when we buy new parts. We used to guess what a "fair" price would be and then multiply it by 3. Now we guess what the "fair" price would be-and multiply it by five. Comes pretty close. Works with corn and beans too, only in the opposite direction! LOL Don

I got a pleasant surprise a couple weeks ago also. I was working on the 2 speed axle on a 1954 truck with a 23,000# Eaton axle I needed all the shifting gears for the 2 speed. I found them on the shelf in the first truck shop I called for $280. I did not think that was to bad. I was just hoping they would be available at all.

I needed internal parts for the Eaton 2 spd in my 1939 Ford dump truck, found them too, apparently very available. This was a goofy sheet metal shroud around the ring gear that would carry oil up to dump on the pinion bearings. This is a mechanical shift, with the lever by your left knee. Sure would like someone to show me how to split gears, using both hands and not slowing down where you have to start over.............................

Good for you. Saved a little. If you didn't have one it would be 500. Rod im still working on my 13. I've decided it should have a new exhaust manifold never bought one. Is that something that should come from case or are aftermarket ok

Bought the manifold and turbo from Shoupparts.com for my 1170. Work fine.
