Thinking About Buying this VAC, opinions?

The first tractor I learned to drive was a Case VAC. I have come across one very similar to the one I drove years ago. It is 2 and 1/2 hours from me. Seller claims it ran 3 years ago, was parked and forgotten about. He says he has the fenders for it. I see the drawbar is missing too. I will ask about it. He is asking $1500 for it. What do you all think of it and what is a fair price based on the limited amount of info I have given you? I was thinking more like $800? I am a cheap skate? lol I am not sure what I would use it for so I am not willing to fork out alot of money.

VACs are good tractors. This will need some work: seat suspension is bottomed out, missing intake and exhaust parts, flat left rear tire, non-running. As-is, I would treat it as a parts tractor, I think $800 is too high.

If the rubber is good, and from what I can see, but you didn't comment on that. And all the parts are there, I don't think he is to far off. Make sure he has the parts, and manuals?

VAC-13 with optional torsion spring seat, front and rear weights, still has the toplink, larger diameter rear tires and a custom bumper...

Also, it is missing the correct Eagle Hitch leveling box and one of the side tinwork pieces.
I paid 800 for mine and it was in about the same condition. (it ran though)

Also is missing the hood latch but the overall tinwork looks pretty straight.

If you do get it or at least look at it I would be interested in comparing its serial number with my VAC-13.

Thanks for the reply. What would you offer?

Thank you for the reply. I do not know the condition of the rubber, I will find out.

I thought I about asking him for the serial number before I drive down to look at it. He says it is a 1956 but I thought they only made them till 1955? He also said its 47 hp....so his information may not be real reliable. Can you post a picture of the leveling box you mentioned. Is it required to actually use the 3 point? Have any of you used a 3 point hay spike on yours? Our hay bales average 700lbs. I was wondering if I could feed one bale at a time with it? Trying to justify my purchase to the wife.....more uses the better.

A lot of parts missing. If the engine is free 500. would be top. For 1500. you can find a complete running tractor in nice shape. Steve

The 3 point leveling box is not required. The adjuster that is in its place will work for hooking up 3 point equipment it will just be slightly more work to adjust it if you need to. I am skeptical towards it
lifting a round bale of hay especially if it has any moisture. My VAC-13 trips the relief valve before I am able to lift a round bale. Its probably for the best though.

A 300 would be a little more do-able to lifting round bales. I have moved a few with mine. The live pump on the transmission does much better at that sort of thing compared to the engine pump on the VAC.

I have attached a few pictures. One is of My (at the time VAC-12) that was in similar condition to yours. Note the beer can air cleaner and the Stock Car steering wheel.

The other picture is of the Eagle Hitch on my VAC. the correct leveling arm/box is on the left side.

This VAC-13 is 1952-1953-1954. It has a 124 cid engine, Nebr Test Lab hp 19 drawbar and 21 pto. Rear tires cost $500 - $600 each. Check rear rims for erosion around valve stem. Original used drawbars sell for about $100 in my area. You can probably live with that seat on a part time tractor, it isn't like you are going to be sitting there long days plowing or something. Looks like original 6 volt generator if it hasn't been rewound for 12 volt, check the battery 3 cells 6V, 6 cells 12V.

Stuck engine isn't usually a show stopper, IMO any VAC that I can't start and drive is worth no more than $500, if that.

The grill is a late model VAC. It looks like it is missing the cap on the air cleaner. Could be full of water.

(quoted from post at 02:06:59 02/15/17) Joe, is the straight gear shifter any better indication of year?

No I don't think so. Something like the shifter can be easily replaced over the years. My 1953 VAC-13 had a short stick that curved fwd probably off a VAC-14.

Late 1951 onward tractors had the universal joint steering that would be a major job to substitute on an earlier tractor along with the shape of the bolster with the 2 piece tool bar. Other minor details are the type and location of the missing hood latch, tool box door in the right side sheet, lighting bar, tall grill, etc. I think you are likely aware of most or not all of this.

Another look at that shifter. I haven't seen a shifter like that on a VAC, could be early, mid 40's??? When I was a kid on the farm we had a 46 or 47 VAI that seems to me vaguely looked like that.

"I think you are likely aware of most or not all of this".

That sentence should have read:

"I think you are likely aware of most or IF not all of this".

I think you know as much or more than I do about VAC.

Thanks for the info Joe. My VAC was so dilapidated when I got it I always have had a suspicion that the rearend had been taken from a slightly older VAC (the older steering). Mine has the bent shifter and the
most like mine seem to have straight.

Thanks for posting those pictures. Nice looking tractors you have. I would be interested in adding atleast one remote if I do get this tractor. Seems like now every implement we have has a hydraulic cylinder of some kind. Even the tedder! I would also love to find a Case E-7 sickle mower. Do they pop-up for sale very often? I am waiting on him to give me the serial number. Once he does that I will loosely negotiate a price over the phone to see if he will come down to reality on the price and THEN go take a look at it. Thank you all for all the comments and information. I came to the right place for information once again!

Both of my 1952 VAC13's have that shift lever. Nice that it has the 3 point 3rd link - that can get spendy. I think $800 is too much also. $500 would be better. Jerry

I bought the tractor and brought it home. I have been sick for a week so nothing has really been done to it yet. Both wheels are rusted out around the valve stem.

I got it running! Rebuilt the carb, new points and condensor and a new coil. Still needs a few things but I am relieved that it runs.
