VAC transmission?

Hello purchased a pair of 1950 VAC tractors. Got one running but the other supposedly ran until they lost reverse and then they parked it and put the loader onto the second one. My question is can I use transmission parts from an older VAC? I have several 1946 parts tractors if that will work. Any thoughts about what might be wrong to have reverse quit working? Thanks, Mike

Might have lost the shifter fork/ broken ect I would pull the shifter and look that over first can be a bad gear ect many of the gears ect interchange but depending on model and year they can be different parts

The weakest part of a VAC transmission is the reverse idler gear. The teeth shear off. It can be changed by simply pulling the gear shifter/cover. The idler shaft can be slid back after loosening a lock screw. Be sure to drain the trans and recover all of the broken teeth or they can make it to the differential spider gears or other places and do much damage. If this is your problem the gears from your parts tractors will work in all years. It looks like you have a couple off nice VAC's with a lot of potential. I really like the eagle hitch VACs. Nick

I'm with Nick on this one. Low gear lube and forcing the tractor into reverse wears out the gear AND the bronze/copper bushing it slides on. While you are in there and in the others look over the other gears. As 2nd and third wear it will start popping out of gear when a load is applied or let off. I know all this because btdt. gobble
