Case 1490 experiences

Looking at a 1980ish 1490 diesel with a loader on it with around 4900 hours. Tires around 50%. Slightly rusty but not bad looking. I tried to post a picture but It was to big , anyone tell me how to resize it I will try. Dealer asking $5500 delivered about 60 miles to my place. Probably a little more tractor than I need since it's basically a brush hogger replacing my 8N, I'm hoping to remove the loader most of the time since it's all giant pins not bolts holding it to the frame. The hoses will need some re plumbing but interested in how big a job it is to take on and off. I would be interested in fuel consumption experience. Center of gravity pros and cons since I have steep hills. I will spend a day with the tractor so what are the problem areas to inspect? Also interested in the shifting pattern, it has a shifter off behind the right leg to the rear, looks like it would be comfortable, is it? Please share any 1490 experiences and or opinions appreciated?

I bought one new (with cab) in 1981. It was THE WORST tractor I have ever owned ( I own over 20 tractors right now ). Diesel fuel leaking from injection pump into crankcase, AC problems, the hydraulic pump quit working and numerous other problems. Mind you this was a NEW tractor with less than 200 hours on it when I got rid of it. Traded it back to Case dealer ( who was also an Allis Chalmers dealer ) for an Allis Chalmers 6080, which I still own and has been one of the best tractors I have ever owned. I will never own another Case because of that tractor. If I were you, I would keep looking for something else.

As a dealer we sold 10 or so 1412 DB's Great tractors a 1490 is just a updated version, but then we sold dozens of DB's every year from 1971-1976 we also bough a 1965 990 DB still have it in the family today with very few repairs,, a 1690 I would walk away from as they had engine issues,, myself I would not be afraid of a 1490 but it all depends on how they were taken care of the last 40 years its not a new unit

1490 is more of an improved 1210(add wet brakes, big crankshaft with cheap pump, heavier front axle) than it is a 1410.

Is it front wheel assist?

We were Case dealers during that era also. We never had the type of problems you described. Fuel going into engine could occur in two places (1) lift pump, easy fix. (2) front seal on injection pump. Your AC had the same pump. You didn't mention if you had leakage or electrical problems with your AC.
WE liked selling 1490s as they were very economical on fuel, lots of power and very nimble, especially with loader.

always good to get both sides of the story. appreciate the opinions. Aside from what I have read about good fuel efficiency for this tractor does anyone have any raw numbers from experience, for example, how much fuel will I use an hour brush hogging? or something along the lines of how long a tank will last?

I have no real numbers to offer you and the old saying goes (millage may very). We never had any customers who had any issues that we couldn't fix. We put over 10,000hr. on the 1490 syncro 4x4 up on the family farm before it was traded for a 5130 Maxxum

If you figure twice as much work as your 8N would do with an equal amount of fuel, you should be in the ballpark.

I ran a 1210 pulling a 10 foot brush Hog mowing County roads,, pulling it hard cutting 5 foot tall grass you had a heck of a time getting 10 gallon through it in 8-9 hrs running time,, they traded it later and replaced it with a 7700 Ford same mower same hours the Ford always burned at least double the 1210 did

Here is a picture of it, In case you are wondering I paid $5000 for it. As far as I can tell it is a straight 12 speed syncro mesh model, I don't see any power shift or hydra shift levers, How do you know if you have front wheel assist?
