870 Trans Oil Level

First pic is a trans of a early PS 870 and the second pic is a white 870 PS tractor. Never seen one like the late one before. Does anyone know why they would have lowered the oil level.The tractor has been in the same family since new and has never been painted. It was delivered to them like that. Rod.

Just my two cents, and I'm sure you have thought of it - but do you suppose the upper glass was broken at some point, and rather than get a new one, they put a plug in it? Maybe they moved the sticker down, or, someone did later, not knowing better, thinking it was on wrong? The top of the sticker still has the rounded edges to it like it was meant to go on top of that pad in the casting.....Looks like it has been cut crooked too..
I know you said it is a one owner - maybe a repair guy oops (or two) long ago??
 
Just a guess
Could it be due to different tire size affecting the ride level of the tractor, in turn changing where the sight glass should be to read accurately?
 
Poor ol 870....yeah that looks like a factory deal on this one don't it? Rod's pic made me think someone did that after the fact...but the orange paint on the plug
and not having been re-painted wouldn't make sense if someone threw a plug in it...

A mystery. Someone will figure it out. That ol girl have any fenders you need to get rid of?
 
Hmmm, good to see there is others marked that way, now I wonder if the Ops manuals for these tractors got printed differently for that change and how about the decal in a
parts book. They obviously are cut decals. Rod.
 
To me it looks as if the sticker was cut in half and made level with the lower glass - see the rounded edge of the upper corner of the sticker and the flat bottom edge against the rounded cast edge... my two cents. Brian Case farm kid
