Case 990 opinions?

There is a Case 990 about 50 miles from me that I'm interested in but to be honest I know next to nothing about Case tractors.

I believe this model was made in England and is the same as a David Brown model?

Are there any weak points to be aware of?

Are parts readily available for this model?

My use for it would be as a utility tractor for Bush hogging and possibly adding a loader too.

The asking price is 2000.00 but I haven't begun to haggle yet, I hope to get over to see it Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks for your time, Allen

The DB/CASE 990 is one of the most dependable tractors built. Great power to weight ratio and dependable as they come. Jump on and turn the key and go. If the key doesn't make it turn over just jump the starter solonoid with a screwdriver with tranny in nutral, if the battery is good. HeHe
Electrical issues are the only real problem with them.

990s were built over a long period of time, major changes happened along the way. If it truly is a Case version it will be a later one with many of the more desirable updates. That said lots of older ones have had paint and decals.

All that said if it runs and everything works 2000 is a deal for any of them.

Different engine Jim. The late 990 uses the same block as your 1210, but only has a 4" stroke(4/49 engine) instead of 4 1/2" that a 1210 has. (4/55 engine)

The early 990 used a different engine (4/47).

I know some of the David Browns had issues with the 3 point lift. Might want to try it to see how it works.

I appreciate everyone's help. I just got off the phone with the owner and he was very honest about the tractor imo.

It burns oil and needs ether to start, His opinion is that it needs an overhaul and I believe he's right and I'm not comfortable with even attempting it.

Nice to run into an honest seller. FWIW, the 990 is a great tractor and if you could get it cheap and put the money into a rebuild it would be worth it.

That's mostly people locking the lift in the up position and not knowing how to release it or not changing the hyd fluid. It's a 15 minute fix.

so Bret4207 if I could get a Case 990 for around $250 to $500 not knowing if it runs would that be a good deal?

Depends on whats wrong with it and what the tires are worth. It would probably be worth $500 in parts alone if you want to dismantle it, or it might just need a fresh battery and fuel to run, it depends. One good tire and rim might be worth the $500, it depends on all the unknowns.
