2290 needle bearings

Drained hydraulic oil at plug by the draw bar and had a few very small needle bearings come out. Any ideas where these may have come from? This is the same tractor that jumps out of third i posted about. Thanks.

The smallest needle brgs found in that trans are used to make up the thrust washers that go between the gears on the pinion shaft. They are maybe about a 1/4 in long. Does that sound like what you found? Rod.

Yes 1370rod sounds like what i found. looking at the parts book i was hoping that was it. Could this job (replacing shift collars) be completed without splitting the tractor?

No, tractor has to be split and trans case nearly gutted to remove the collars as they are on the pinion shaft. Wish I had better news but it is a big job. Rod.

I have never split a 20 or 2290 to replace the ring and pinion or the key on the park lock gear. You will need to remove the axles and diff to do it.Not splitting tractor will save a lot of time and labor. Just remove gear on front of intermedite shaft, remove nut on front of pinion, then remove bearing, then snap ring and shaft is out. No messing with powershift.Only need to split when it is mfd, will also work for 94 series also.

NO,that 2290 does not need to be split,I totally agree with r.b I have done many of them during the rework program. Also replaced pinion shafts due to the park issue.

While i am in the rear end would you replace any other "common" or problem parts? I only want to have it apart once.I have done a complete on the engine, i have went through the power shift and now the rear end if i have to. So putting to much money in this tractor is not a huge concern at this point. This is one of the many case tractors we use on our farm and would like to keep this one in the fleet. Thanks for your help.

Yes I agree, back in the day we did many updates and ring and pinion replacements without splitting the tractor. But that was over 30 years ago when the tractors were almost new. For the past 20 years or so I have always split the tractor so a complete checkout of the rest of the drive train could be done. There has always been another problem that is caught before it too causes a future breakdown. I should have explained your options for doing the repair, it all depends on how thorough you want to be when repairing your tractor. Rod.

You have already done the powershift. You will check the diff and brakes and planetarys when the rearend is apart. You can also check the pto at the same time. If you split it,it will will be a double split because of c2 and c3.A lot of extra work.

I am going to do a complete tear down at this point it only makes sense to me with the cost of new tractor. if i can catch some other issue not seen unless i do a complete tear down of rear end its bound to break down in season. Being a mechanic at a dealership i have no issues with the extra work cause i will be doing this in my shop when time allows. I have just never had a case rear end apart this far and appreciate all the info everyone has offered thanks.
