Oil pump timing?

I am installing an oil pump on a case 830ck with the 284 gas engine. The I and T manual says to put #1 at TDC and the rotate the pump shaft until the narrow side is towards the block.

The picture seems to show the wide side labeled "narrowest side" toward the block. Is any one here familiar with this?

The narrow part of the slot is to be closest the block. I've looked at the pics in my 830CK shop manual, and my Racine 400 manual, and the pic is the same, just copied by IT. The pic angle is deceptive, go with the description. Or you can rearrange your dist cap wires, but that just messes you for next time you svc the ignition..............

Great, thanks.

I put it in the way you described.

I also set the oil pump relief by thee book. It had been turned out another 1/4 inch. Not sure what effect that will have, with all new bearings i figured I should go by the book and work from there.

I just tried to start it and after some cranking it blew flaming gas out the carb and lit the alternator on fire.

I am thinking the timing might be 180 degrees off.

I guess i will try to figure out how to shift the plug wires around to make it work for now.

I timed the oil pump by the book, or so i thought. Turns out it was 180 degrees off so i just reversed the plug wires and it runs great now. Some day(20-30 years from now) I will drop the pan and put it in right.
