First Tractor Purchase

I am new to here. So I decided to move north and buy a farm. Well then I needed a tractor to move round bales and snow in the winter. Never looked at them before and don't have money that they want for tractors now a days. I am a young guy. So I found what I thought was a deal so tell me if I'm wrong. I had to bring my father in law cause I don't know what is what and even how to drive one... Haha. So I had found a David Brown 1210 online guy was nice and explained stuff so I could understand. Never heard of David Brown so I was a little leary. My father in law runs old Oliver s so he was the best choice. So here is what I bought. And what was included.

David Brown 1210 2wd Diesel 3456 hrs
-Cozy Cab with Heater
-Woods Loader and bucket with grapple
-Quick attach 3pt

It was very well taken care of and stored inside.
I paid $6k

So now did I make a good choice, and is there anything I should know about them. It will need tires soon and I understand the size is hard to come by

Sounds like a fair deal....those were a decent tractor, better if not equipped with a
power shift. If well cared for, it will last you a long time. That size tire, if it
is an 15 x 30 rim, are easy to find new or used. Good luck with it. Ben

. You will be fine with that tractor. David Brown was a small tractor manufacturing company when Tenneco ( who owned JI Case) bought that company and merged them with Case. Good company. Case are the only tractors we farm with

I'd say you did okay on that deal. I've had an 885 DB with Sims cab for about 33 years that's about the best purchase I've ever made.

it will have a shifter on the dash that has four gears,, we sold a pile of 1212/1412 tractors all were power shift I only worked on one in my life the one I ran where I worked I put 6000 plus hrs on never a issue

DB was far from being a small tractor company. they were a major player in the European market.
They also manufactured tractors for other North American tractor companies such as Cockshutt, White/Oliver.
Case/Tenneco Bought DB because their ability to build medium HP Ag. tractors was consumed by the market for industrial TLB units, AND The acquisition of DB allowed Case to market their product line into a global market. DB engineering and mfg. played a major roll in the production of the Case-IH Maxxum series of tractors.
Today the DB plants in England and Germany and elsewhere are producing many more tractors than CNH produces in the good old USA

As a Case dealer, the PS in a DB 12 series was bullet proof. Problems were very far and few between. You could even tow start them if needed. The hyd pump that provided pressure to lock discs and bands was driven by the differential, not the engine. (low pressure-low speed)

Best of luck on your new adventure. I can't give any advise. Other than the 1973 Xase David Brown I have that dad bought new is still feeding hay. However I don't want to know what it's like feeding hay up North!

Adironack case, I have a question for you but not on this subject. My neighbor just bought a restored Case 1070 Golden Demo with original build card and now he has just found a restored Spirit 1570 without build card and he is wondering how to tell if it is an original. Any help?

They like warn Guinness beer and stop at 2:00 for
tea. Find a service/ owners manual and sit down
with it. There's a little to learn about the hydraulic
settings. I've had a 4600 DB for 8 years and am
very happy with it. The 1210's were good. You'll be
fine.

To determine if the Spirit is an original call Joan Larson at CNH at 262-636-7540 and get a build card It will say if it had Spirit decals. All you
need is serial number. Cost about 5 bucks.

hanks! Case addict I called her and she gave me the bad news, the Spirit that is for sale was built in 1978 and on build card of course it says nothing about the special decals. She was very helpful!

hanks Caseaddict! I called the number and she was very helpful. She gave me bad news as the 1570 Spirit was built in 1978 with of course no mention of the spirit decals! I will keep looking!

I always laugh when its brought up about how Tenneco bought it rather than Case,,,, we were a dealer at the time of the Tenneco purchase,, it was stated Loudly that Tenneco was NOT going to "run" Case as Case had their own management team in place and was doing just fine. They were there as investors to Make Money. Sure Tenneco gave the go-ahead to buy DB and IH and several other companies but it was still Case writing the check,, Case a subsidiary of Tenneco and was owned by them that is a fact. Not sure if they still do but JD owned CAT, but you never heard of JD buying something for Cat heck I am betting not many even knew they own or owned and major chunk of Cat.

just like to tell it how it really was and not how many tell how it was

It is a fake then. I painted a very early 1370 to match the 1570 spirits in 76 also. Joan gave you the lowdown with the build card. Only made in limited numbers in 1976.

had pretty well determined it was a fake when I had my son run the serial number at work (Birkeys Case/IH). He came up with 1978 also. I knew they were built only in 1976.

I was doing research on it for a neighbor that was interested in buying it. I'm personally a huge Case toy collector!

just like to tell it how it really was and not how many tell how it was case nutty, I did some research and JD never owned any part of Cat. Without Tenneco's money Case was not financially able to purchase the other companies.

You did fine. DB made a very good tractor, just used a little different thinking in engineering them than us Yanks did. Get and operators manual, a shop manual and find and bookmark the David Brown Tractor Club. You'll get all the info you'll need. And FWIW, it is far, far easier to get parts for DB's now than it was even 10 years ago. That's one thing the internet is good for!
