2290 power shift split question

Going to fix this tractors jumping out of third gear issue. Took power shift valve off side of tractor found shift collar gears gone. Question is will it be easier to
split once and roll out from under cab with engine end or is it best to split engine, power shift, then gear trans in three separate chunks. Thanks for the help
 
If you think the PS might need some work split at engine , if not split at the trans under the cab and that is a little tricky if you are unfamiliar with the procedure. Rod.
 
I have already overhauled this tractors power shift about five years ago, now it jumps out of third as described. Is there anything on these tractors to specifically look for when spliting at the trans or is it just going to be a lot of weight to roll out.Thanks
 
Those darn shift collars are on the pinion shaft and that means a entire rearend teardown to replace. The tricky part is loosening the PS output shaft and having it stay with the rest of the PS as the tractor is split, make sure to get a CASE factory manual explaining the procedure. Or if in doubt split at engine and remove entire rear and do it that way. It is more work, but if something comes apart in the PS when splitting the other way you might end up take it all apart anyway. I am not trying to confuse you but a pinion shaft removal is a lot of work. Rod.
 
Pinion shaft/4spd gears, intermediate shaft, and forks can be removed after removing differential, trans side cover and RPS valve. Special puller by OTC prob needed to pull pinion shaft front brg.
 
I have a factory manual and have been reading and reviewing it already. Thanks for the info you have provided me with.
 
I have had well over twenty pinion shafts or replaced the park lock keys in 20 or 2290s and have not ever split the tractor. If tractor has mfd it will need to be split. It is a lot easier not to split and saves a lot of time.R.b
