Case 1490 clutch and flywheel installation

Is it very important to install the clutch and flywheel in center some way?
Can it in some way be installed out of center?

I have heard that there is a risk that some part is not exactly in the center, and that will wear out the main bearings in the engine, or eaven break the crankshaft after som use.

Is there some special tool that i should use to get this right?

Here's a free pdf of the clutch manual for your tractor. It should have the information you are looking for:

Here is the google site that contains the above manual as well as a number of other free manuals for David Brown tractors:

The manual should cover you. But to add an answer. The clutchplate is held in place by a pressure plate. So it has room to move around without the drive spline inserted into the middle of the clutch. They do make line up pins. It does make it easier if you find the correct one. Otherwise you can only eye the center up to the flywheel. The flywheel has a small hole in the center that the transmission drive spline fits into for balance and support. If it doesn't go into the hole it will cause problems. And it's why a line up pin makes it easier. It's hard to wiggle half a tractor to get it in.
If you tighten the bell housing to the engine and it isn't in the hole it can break itself, the flywheel or crank. And other damage. Possibly. But just notice as you tighten bell housing down to the engine. Go around and tighten them all together turning each a turn or maybe two then the next to keep everything even. If it takes a lot of force to tighten the last half inch question it.

It should take Only take a comfortable force until the bolts seat. If it takes a pull handle something is wrong. With the tractor split take note of how deep the spline goes into the center of the flywheel. Then when the bell housing bolts get that close you'll notice a change if it isn't inline. If it takes a large force when they meet for half a turn or so it's normal. It's moving into the hole but slightly off. Past that it should free up and take less force.so just don't continue with excessive force to seat the bolts. Hope that makes sense.

A couple thoughts...

Is it single speed PTO, or 2 Speed? If single speed, I hope you put the PTO in gear before splitting. If you didn't and the Cardan shaft came forward at all, you will need to remove the PTO box to put the gear back in place.

Only one way that the flywheel will line up correctly. You have 4 studs and a dowel. If the dowel is in the mating hole in the flywheel you are good to go.

As to the clutch pack... I have heard rumors that the clutches were balanced to the rotating assembly(flywheel, crank, pulley). If you already have it apart, and didn't mark it, not much you can do now but put it back together. Not sure I believe the rumor, especially if you have the Borg and Beck clutch, lots of moving parts in there that all have some "wiggle room".

Yes, I have seen that instruction, but I can not find anything abouting getting all things in exact center.
It just show in what order to replace things. Install the flywheel. But it says nothing about if it is important to get it in the center in some way.
A strange thing is that in the beginning it says what special tools I will need, for exampel a dial indicator. But it is not used in the instruction.
Should I not use the dial indicator on the flywheel?

And the clutch assembly, it seems to me that the special tools are just made for making it easier to put it together, not to make thins get placed in the center. And in the end, just mount in on the flywheel.

The thing I am worried about, is if there is some part that must be placed exactly in the center, and if not, something will brake after some use in the future.
