Haulers brought my little 580 CK home today. I
bought it early last fall at an estate sale. It hard
started that day with lots of gray, diesel-heavy
smoke. I lifted the bucket and boom that day. I've
had the flu so I didn't try anything today. Where
should look first for the cause of the heavy smoke?
Fairly nice old rig. Missing the assist cylinder on the
right side of the loader. Extend-a-boom. Good
bucket. 188 diesel. Brand new right rear tire. I
remember this hoe running a few years back.
Owners said it has sat for last three years. Cylinder
shafts still clean and shiney. Kind of proud of it!

congratulations ,. you will luv the 188 diesel ///sitting 3 yrs ?// I would not worry too much about the smoke,,. Case inpoint , last july ,I bought a davidbrown case 1210 that had not run much since original owner passed away 12 yrs ago ,. motor ran and started ok, but pift wiffed smoke ,I knew this motor needed new engine protection , or else it would demand a ring job . got it home and chekt fuel , it lookt o k, but fuel level was less than 3 inches ,I added 2 qts of atf fluid , a pint of lucas fuel stabilizer and cylinder lubricant , a half cup of 911, and half cup of seafoam , then filled it with new fuel and drove it over to a welder shop to repair the loader 3 miles away ,. the 1st steep hill I had 2 drop a gear, did not want to hammer her too hard ,. ran the motor at different rpms as I drove along , by the time I got to the shop it seemed to be running and sounding much better,. on return trip a week later I was certain it was running great ,. no smoke except in a fueling pull ,.

Your gonna love it.. Don't worry about the smoke right away.. check/change the engine oil. drain the fuel tank, theres a drain chuck on the bottom, change the filters, add some clean fuel w/ an injector cleaner and run the snot out of it.. easy at first.. Theres a ton of information and parts available for these machines..
Over on another site HEF, theres 3 threads on rebuilding them from the ground up..Brakes, cylinder repak, shuttle trans, electrical.. with pictures and step by step instruction.. how to build tools & the do's & dont's.. and links to parts suppliers.. Good luck and have fun..

You are gonna love that old backhoe. They are sure tough and a good value plus you can work on it without a computer degree. Service manual and parts book and a couple forums will get you going and keep you running. Looks like a 68 with that serial number.

I bought an old 69 several years ago and ran it until the old 159 gasser finally had no rings left. $3500 professional rebuild of the engine and I did a rolling restoration on mine. It will outlive me now. Good machines.

The extra cylinder is to make the bucket self leveling, it is part of the bucket circuit. They started on the 530 series.

When I got my 580CK a few years ago the only tag on it was on the #33 Hoe S/N 4142456. Case IH (Rich Tworek) told me it was built in 1967. yours being 4161950 should be newer.
