RPS 34 Selector Spool Ball

Hello,
Cleaning a badly sludged RPS34 control valve off of a 970. Been out to pasture for 25 years. Literally. I have removed all of the components to give it a good soaking, cleaning and seal kit. Everything came out just as the service manual shows, except the ball inside of the selector spool refuses to come out from the end of the spool. Tried compressed air, tapping it on an wood block, etc. No way to push on it.... Is it supposed to be free, or does it remain seated inside? Looking at the flow diagrams, it appears perhaps is it simply plugging the end of the spool? Hate to put it back together if it is supposed to be free. Thanks for any advice!

That ball remains in the spool, it plugs the center as you mentioned. I never noticed before that they show it individual of the spool, sort of confusing. You will want to leave it in there. Rod.

Rod,
Thanks as always for the help. I guess that's how they sealed the end of the spool after drilling it. Man was that valve sludged up...bypass valves WERE in the filters, but at some point in the life of the machine, they must have been bypassing.
Original complaint on this tractor was C4 would not engage - no reverse, no grunt, painful range shifting. Upon teardown, noticed C4 piston seal (inner) was torn. C4 clutch disk, plate and reaction plate were trashed bad. Scored, blue, sintered lining gone. C1 a little rough too. C2 and C3 not bad at all. At some point, I discovered the backing wire in that bad C4 seal was gone, although most of the seal still was still present in the piston. I think this wire had popped out, was grabbed by C4, and destroyed it and didn't do any favors to C1. Spring steel stuck between disks and plates would certainly do a number. Didn't help the obvious oil contamination issue either, I'm sure.
I know the old style seals were a problem (I did get new style pistons and seals for re-assembly), but have you seen the wires come out and do damage before?
Have a good day!

Sounds like that was one dirty system, glad to hear you are doing well on the rebuild. I have never seen one of those wires come out. For some reason I seem to think some of the very first 70 series tractors with the PShift did not have the wires when they left the factory. And then again I might have just dreamed that, LOL. Rod.

Yeah - the other seals all did have the wires.... I thought the same thing at first, maybe they didn't come with the wire. I never had any reason to dig any of the old seals out, as I got different pistons. I finally did pull some of the other seals out, as it was bothering me why that one didn't have a wire. More like a thin snap ring...
When I ordered the pistons, (I wasn't thinking) the salvage yard sold me a seal kit too. A&I seals. Wish I would have got the CNH ones....do you have any feedback on A&I seals? They look OK, and for all I know they may be who makes them for CNH (or are better than those who do). I sometimes don't hear good things about A&I is what prompts me to ask...
Thanks! Keep us posted on that 2470.

I have never used the A+I seals, but it would not surprise me if they were the same. 2470 is just about done, waiting for a couple cyl. seal kits. Rod.
