2470 Steering Problems

One of the issues with the 2470 was the rear steer did not operate properly. I removed and cleaned the rear steering valve as the centering spring was all rusted up from not being used for a very long time. That helped but it sill was not right. I checked the system and cable adjustment and the only thing left that could cause the problem was the cylinders. After pressure testing them I found the RH one to have a huge leak. Sure enough the bolt had broke securing the piston to the ram, that does cause a serous leak, LOL. Bet things will work much better now. Rod.

Does the lack of paint on the steering valve mean it was off before? Were the wheels custom made or off something else? Wish I could get the pressure up on the front steering on my 4690, only 1200# cold. But the rear will go lock to lock easily sitting still, but the front won't turn sitting still.

Steve, Statically the front axle carries 20% more weight than the rear. It is bound to take more effort to steer it setting still, and those bug duals have to be skidded across the ground to steer. When in the field under load, the weight balances out. I'm sure you realize that.

Yes I realize that, but 1200 is too low on pressure to move the wheels and duals. Of course the rear has duals also. The 2470 with duals turns easily at idle and standing still. I'll have to put the gauge on the rear steering cylinders and check pressure on them. Some place there is a restriction as I have had the relief valve apart and it looks and operates okay.

Steve the rear steer valve and the brake master cly's were not painted from the factory so it is difficult to know if they ever have been replaced. The wheels on this tractor with the solid center are a custom build. I am glad someone did that as those factory individual lugs can be a real pain in the a$$ at times. Rod
