Case D head nuts and valve clearance

Recently started up and ran my restored D engine for the first time. Started and ran great. The IT shop manual says the head nuts should be retightened after reaching operating temp. Is there a torque wrench or adapter that would allow me to do this without removing the rocker assembly? Also in the Case Service Manual it talks about rechecking the valve clearance while running at idle speed. Is this possible? Can someone elaborate on this please?

If you can get straight on it with a torque wrench and a crows foot adapter you can use this chart if you can not get straight on that is the crows foot adapter is not straight in line with the torque wrench then its a little more complicated. let us know well walk you through it. So its Torque times the length of the torque wrench set at the required torque measure length from the center of the handle to the center of the square that you would put sockets on. In the example it would be 18.75 X 250= 4687.5 Now divide that answer by the length of the torque wrench plus the adapter length. that would be 18.75 + 2.00= 20.75 now 4687.5 divided by 20.75=225.9 or 226ft.lb hope this helps Byron

(quoted from post at 22:51:48 01/17/17) OK, looking for an adaptor that will work.
You can bend the adapter down so long as its still straight also if the adapter at 90 degrees the torque is the same anything different will change the torque.

George md over at Tool Talk had this arrangement of wrenches. The wrenches on the left are obsolete. You might find these on ebay, or print this pic and take it to your local handy machinist friend and he can shape them for you. Then you can lend them to me! Good luck. CM

I ended up finding a wrench just like the one in the center of your picture on ebay. Made by Snap-On and worked perfect. Cost was $26 which I thought was pretty good for a Snap-On wrench.

Glad to hear you got it thanks for posting back. The other issue you mentioned. Also in the Case Service Manual it talks about rechecking the valve clearance while running at idle speed. Is this possible? Can someone elaborate on this please?

My take on it is. Even If its running it should not snag the feeler gauge if the gap is set right.
