Rebuilding a 284 with 301 sleeves?

The full rebuild kit for a 284 gas engine out of a Case 830 costs about 2300 dollars. For the 301 it is less than 1000. I have read that the block can be machined to take 301 pistons and sleeves. Does anyone here have direct knowledge,he of this?

There is water in the oil and the head gaskets looked ok. I could move the pistons side to side enough to make a knocking sound. Sleeves could be leaking too. Or maybe the oil filter mount, I hadn't thought of that, it seems to be a cooled mount.

I did a 284 in a W9 loader , was going to change to 301

but the piston pins are bigger . the cost of rods put

a stop to the idea .

This combination will work if you use 830 or 1030 diesel rods, your compression ratio will be higher also so power time the ignition and set your main jet on a dyno. And get ready to buy a lota gas if your going to work it hard!!

I suppose that would require premium gas. The specs already say it will burn 6 gallons per hour at full load.

Yes, the Pins are bigger in the 301. Both the 301 & the 451 in the 1030 use 1-1/2" Pins, whereas the 284 Gas in the 830 uses 1-3/8" pins.
