Rocker Arm Wick

Just wondering what the purpose of the wick on the Exhaust Rocker arms on the 400/700/800's. also are they necessary to replace in a rebuild. thanks Josh

They are there to slow the flow of oil down the rocker arm to lubricate the exhaust valves. Without them it is possible for a fair amount of oil to leak out of the exhaust. This was before valve stem seals came into use. Essentially they are the old fashioned pipe cleaners. When I overhauled my 400 diesel I replaced them.
