Case 970 wont start

Hi Folks First time posting here but have lurked for a while and learned much (I am a complete newb to case tractors).
I have a case 970 (mid seventies) that wont start. It fires for a few seconds and then shuts done with authority. Does this sound like a hydraulic issue? From what I have read it seems that the power shift systems can cause this issue but I am, as I said very new to Case tractors. Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you tried to start it in neutral with the clutch pedal up?? This won't cure the problem, which is likely stuck pilot spools, but could isolate which spool is stuck.

Hi and thanks for the reply yes I tried it in neutral with clutch in.....same result. It sounds like it is going to start but after a few seconds it abruptly snuffs.

It originally stalled out when I put it in reverse.I started and moved it about 30 feet all seemed fine until I shifted out of forward. Would that narrow the problem?? Of course it is sitting in the middle of the driveway (just my luck)

Put the power shift lever in 3rd and try starting it. It will more than likely start and run fine, only problem is it will kill again when you push the clutch
down. More than likely you have a pilot spool stuck in the control valve and that will need to be corrected before the tractor operates properly. Trying to drive
it in this condition could even cause more problems. Generally a oil and filter change and control valve cleaning will cure most of these problems but the
possibility of something wrong in the powershift still is there. Rod.

Are you in a cold climate?
If you are and you can get it to run how 1370rod suggested, try letting it warm up real good, like 1/2 to 1 hour.
It gets real cold where I am and my 970 has done some strange things if it is not properly warmed up first.

Thanks a bunch guys. I will try that. I have all the filters on order to change the fluids. And yes I am in a cold climate.Northern Ontario.
