I have a 1948 VAC with the original style starter. It is converted to 12 volts. It seems to chew up the leading edge of the gear teeth on the Bendix. I measured the distance of the ring gear edge to the Bendix gear edge and there is about 3/8 inch. It seems to me that this is too much. The 12 volt gets the starter spinning too fast before the teeth can engage. I was thinking of trying to drive the ring gear back on the flywheel with a punch through the starter whole. How successful would that be? If it doesn't work or I go too far I will need to split the tractor to drive the ring gear back. Not a simple task. I also see that there is a new style ratchet Bendix. Would that fit? Does it work better?
Thanks for the help.
