timing injector pump, Case 480B

i need directions to time a injector pump for a case 480b. took off pump to have the shaft replaced installed ,and pump wont work think needs timing not sure how to do it. need a 123 type direction to do the timing thanks

I turned it over with pump off I didn't know a out timing I've only worked on gas 8ns and allis b models. Shaft broke I did it the shut off cable was bad I had to take pump off to get new cable on tried to get hand throttle off from.pump and the shaft broke inside took to pump company they put a new shaft in and when I got it back on it wouldn't start no fuel so figured it was fuel needed bleeding or timed so now figure timing wrong is that right. Gary,

Agree with Al, very easy to be out of time, especially if the shaft was broken to begin with. Timing on some 188s is 8 degrees BTDC on # 1 compression stroke where the pump lines should align, but check the valve cover as Case had the info there too. Either pull the # 1 injector, or may be easier to pull the valve cover and watch the rockers. Since 1 & 4 pistons are at TDC together, watch the # 4 rockers, when the exhaust is almost closed and intake is just starting to open then you can be sure # 1 is up on compression. Engine cam and injection pump both turn at 1/2 crankshaft speed..

The shaft on pump wasn't broken it was the shaft that works throttle on one side and the fuel shut off on the other side couldn't get the throttle rod off at the pump tried to force it that's when that shaft broke on throttle side.

First things first. Take a few minutes and bleed the pump. No smoke means no fuel. You may be ok on timing. Do you have a manual that tells steps how to bleed? Al

No I do not have a manual the only thing I did was put the dot on the Shaft to the top and the one in pump to the top and put shaft into pump turned fuel. On and tried to start no fuel

OK, I will tell you how I would tackle this problem. If you lined up the dots on the pump you can look at the flange where the two nuts fasten the pump to the timing train. Most always there is a flat washer, then a lock. The flat will almost always leave a scar in the aluminum. Line up that washer with the mark in the paint, or aluminum. You should be very close. Get a full flow of fuel at the pump. No bubbles. No foam. then loosen one high pressure line either at the pump, or nozzle. Put throttle at full fuel, and shut off in the run position. Roll engine over and look for smoke. You will need a good battery and starter. Al

Thanks for all your help I'll try that and let u know again thanks so much just never

done this except on a locomotive that had twin cat 1700s. Had to bleed every time we started them finally put electric fuel pumps on them they were bleeding down. Gary
