Engine noise Case VAC

I'm working on a Case VAC that has engine noise. I dropped the oil pan to check the Rod bearings. I noticed there is slop in the oil pump gear. Is that normal? Could it cause noise? What is the best way for checking the rod bearings?

Thanks,
GBott

Also, is there anything else I should check for the noise? 85: a knocking. All pistons and sleeves are good. I'm assuming it's a lower end bearing. It was resonating from the bottom end. Maybe a wrist pin? I've also read about loose flywheels causing noises?

Thanks,
GBott

Make sure the keyway on the crankshaft belt pulley is not worn. You can check it by rocking the fan back and forth. Nick

Check fore and aft endplay on the crank.
Sometimes the pin breaks, that locates the thrust bearing on the front crankshaft bearing;
allowing it to spin and wear muchly.

Thanks for the reply. This tractor sit for a few years after my cousin heard the knock. I got it back running recently. It's gauges are faded, and the freshly rebuilt carb was running at full throttle because of a shade tree mechanic fix on the linkage. I did just find foil like residue in the oil gunk in the pan.

Thanks for the reply. I will check that tonight. I did find bearing residue in the pan.

No. You check it by trying to move the crankshaft pully; fore and aft..
Holding the clutch in made less noise, on mine, when this was the case.
