Tractor of another color

I asked this over on the Deere page and did not get much of an answer. I know you guys are knowledgeable and willing to help. I have a Deere 1010 that I am doing an engine swap. As I went to put the new engine in I found that only the outer shaft coming out of the trans turns. When working on cars the inner and outer shafts turn. So what am I missing here? I disengaged the PTO and the tractor is in neutral. The tractor has not been run in many years. Any help would be appreciated.

On every tractor I have ever worked on the center shaft drives the hydraulic pump and the live PTO. Do you have a locked up pump? I have never been into a 1010 ag tractor. Do you have a need for a 1010 crawler loader backhoe?

I looked at the parts book and think the inner runs the pto. Can you turn the pto?, would think you should be able to turn the pto from the back with the pto clutch engaged. Try to turn the pto first with the clutch disengaged, then engaged. Never been on a 1010, so cant help much, did you try a pair of channel lock pliers on the input shaft that doesn't turn? Since it hasn't ran for a while there might be a little rust between some gears.

I also have asked this on JD board with no answer. If you are installing just another 1010 engine its not relevant. I have the rather rare 4 cylinder JD combine, baler engine have which been told will replace the 1010. They are roughly the same size. Anybody have any knowledge of this??

My engine does have a standard bell housing number 0 I think. Do know its same bell housing as small Oliver tractor.
