case 1070 shifting

Hi my name is Anthony,

I have a 1985 case 1070 that a recently purchased. The tractor runs fine the only issue i have is I need to adjust my 4 range selections. Here is what the shifting does but does not tell me how to adjust it. Apparently you can shift it without using the clutch. My will sometimes go in and sometimes it will grind a bit so I have to almost double and triple clutch it to work can anyone help me PLEASE.

The design uses 2 shifter forks that move 2 sliding gearsets that have 3 positions each.
One shift fork gives you 1st--neutral--3rd range. The other shift fork gives you 2nd--neutral--4th range. To engage any of the 4 range selections one shift fork must always be in neutral position while the other in its appropriate gear position.
Your current problem is caused by both shift forks being out of neutral at the same time, engaging 2 ranges at the same time causing the transmission to lock. The forks move along two shafts each with three notches cut in corresponding to each shift position. A steel ball under spring pressure moves over these notches (detents) to maintain each position. With proper adjustment, moving the gearshift forward and backward you should feel each detent engage in each of the 3 positions on each side of the H shift pattern .

Presumeing you have a RPS-34 tranny, It sounds like you need to adjust the linkage from the inching pedal to the spool on the PS valve. The spool needs to bottom out when pedal is depressed, and you should then hear a destinct engine serge. Then you should be able to shift the 4spd. The 4spt is not a shift on the fly setup. Just the inner lever labled 1-2-3-R is shifted without the use of a clutch.

but loren , forgot to mention ,, YOU MUST USE THE CLUTCH PEDAL TO SHIFTVTO REVERSE,.. AND ,,. THIS TRANNY ALWAYS starts out in 1st or reverse ,,. and you are supposed to power shift up on the go ,never leave the reverse selector in reverse while operating pto ,, it is a lack of lubrication issue . round baling is ok.. just don't sit there for 5 minutes running wide open.. it is best to always use the shifter lever to shift down , saves the cable linkages from needing adjusting , although a tap on the clutch pedal will drop the tranny from 3rd to 2nd ,, and a fully depressed pedal drops to 1st automatically on a well tuned case power shift ..

lorens advice about the power shift spool valve is dead on, when my 1070 came here I could not get 1st and 3rd range,.. it cost me 1800 bux to have it fixt at my friendly ihc dealer that cheerfully adopted us case orphans ,. they also adjusted everything perfect ,,. jacobie sales palmyra ind are good folx

Jim,
I didn't forget to mention what you did about operation about the RPS-34, but the post was a bit wierd, with lots of detail about the manual 4spd portion and no mention of the PS portion. Seamed to me if he had this much knoledge of the manual portion, he would have similar knoledge of the power shift.
I figured if he was a legit poster, he will post back with further questions. I get tired of answering question to first time posters who never reply.

Hi guys thanks for getting back to me.

As for Loren I grabbed that information about the 4spd from another post similar to mine but did not get an answer.

So it seems that it's just my clutch pedal is not extending as far as it should. I will try to use a pry-bar to extend the valve as far as it can go and see what happens.

At the moment when I do press in the clutch it valve does surge but it is giving me a lot of hesitation getting into gears. Sometime it will slip in great and 5 minutes later it will grind so then i have to double or triple clutch even slowly release the clutch slowly that sometimes help.

*Here is what all happened at the beginning. The tractor runs fine but gave but power shift seems to be sticky and it was and the 4 gears went in OK but this needed adjustment. So I rebuilt the valve and gaskets. The power shift work good. Know I am having issues with the 4 gears witch I need to adjust.

Hope this helps with my problem.

yes I feel your pain , and also react the same way too ,,. but today I was feeling generous and waiting for the clock for my dr apt , face it,, loren , we are veterans who have answered the same questions many times and sometimnes don't care to lift a finger to repeat ourselves ,.,. a lot of this info can be found in the archives ,,, trouble is I have trouble navigating to get all the info that is really available ,,,butr the rite word does not cross reference ,,. somthin is different now , compared to 4 or so yrs ago ,..

Take a good look at the platform mounts. If the mounts are loose or broken the adjustments change constantly. On your 4spd., check and see if the linkage rods are straight and not bowed. If bowed the quadrunts get out of line and the lever is very spongy when shifting. We reinforced a lot of the linkage rods by screwing the yoke off and sliding a peice of tubeing over them.
