Pre-49 VA Hi-Pressure hydraulic system

I read on an another post that the torque tube is filled with 2 gallons of 90wt oil and 90wt for the pulley/pump. Does the pump use oil from the torque tube or is it a closed system? If a closed system, why would there be a need to fill the tube? It appears that the pulley/pump unit would hold enough oil for the small lift cylinder. Of course all bet are off if a larger cylinder was used (or an additional cylinder was added). Also, is there a manual for this system? On-line or e-bay or?? Thanks, Wayne

You need to lube the drive shaft bearings and the belt pulley drive/driven gear in the torque tube. SAE90 is used because it meets requirement and is the same oil as used in the transmission.

The high pressure pump has its own reservoir. The original factory oil was SAE10 motor oil. Today's better oil equivalent would be a low viscosity general purpose hydraulic oil with anti foaming additive.

The link is on-line operators manual for VA series prior to 1949. PDF file, slow loading. Hydraulic system starts page 53.

Downloaded and printed the manual. Followed the directions for priming the pump. Pump and 3point now work. Thanks Joe! Wayne
