Brother Chuck and I mounted a rebuilt carb on the DC today. We had metal gasket which mounted between the air cleaner and the carb from the previous installation. We tried using it on the rebuilt carb and found the vertical flange mount to the manifold would not line up. Without it everything lined up perfectly. Is there normally a metal gasket at this position?

There is a metal gasket between the carb and the air cleaner. I use them over with a little ultra blue/black smeared on it. You might have to loosen the air box and neck a little and get everything lined up.

It doesn't take much to break the mounting ears off a DC carb. Make sure you tighten the bolts slowly and evenly.

I agree. I ground down an open end wrench to where it would engage and turn the bolt enough to reengage. This made the wrench too weak to fully tighten the bolt. With a little luck on some of my DCs, the half tight bolt orientation would be such that a regular wrench would engage and tighten the bolt some more. Otherwise, half tight was as good as it got. (sigh)
