Case D Starter Gasket

I am installing a rebuilt starter on my Case D. The cork gasket is about .300 inches thick. Too thick to get the locking screw started into the tapered hole. With the starter locked down without the gasket the space for the gasket is about half the gasket thickness. Is it normal and OK to trim the gasket thickness down to something more reasonable and how much compression should be allowed?

The "D" Series did not use a cork gasket, they used an O Ring which is not available. Notice the O ring groove. I would silicone it.

Home Depot has cork panels of different thicknesses for $5.00 each. I've use them to make gaskets. Buy one a little thinner than you need. You will get some swelling, once it gets wet.

I received the proper size o-ring from Rusty Acres and I cut the cork gasket down to .2" thick. All went together fine.
