hello all, first post, i just acquired a case vai that had been sitting in a field for 20+ years, hoping you all can shed some light on some odd options it has. i will post pics when i can, but the tractor has a square torque tube, not the standard round one, and also has what i think is a triple range on it, just wondering if they were options or if this really is an odd tractor. Also if anyone can share some pics of how the deckplate and clutch linkage mount that would be awesome! thanks all in advance.

Welcome to the Forum!
Can you post pictures?
I have several Case experimental tractors. Check
your casting numbers. If they begin with the letters
EXV they are experimental castings.Regular
Production castings will begin with VT or G.

There were some VAI tractors.converted into
trenchers. These tractors were geared to
move very slow. It is possible thats what
you have.

I reposted.an older post on the VAI with trencher attachment. You need to use modern veiw to see it.

im thinking you are right about it being an old trencher, the grille was cut and the crank had a splined hub bolted on it, maybe for the hydro pump. If it had better tires on it i would try the speeds for the reduction. That would explain the chain drive as well

If you have a serial nr be a good idea to see if there is a factory build card per Connor's post.

What are your plans for it? Are you going to restore the tractor? It certainly seems like an unusual piece. Would be neat to find a use for the gearbox on the side. Adapt a PTO shaft or winch or something of
that nature.

I wish I had the serial number but the plate is gone, I plan on restoring it, bought it for 100 dollars and got it running where it sat so I could drive it on the trailer.

Small world! I have one like this also, chain drive, vai. All though mine has a loader and no power steering. I also have one ( vac ) that is a gear
drive, straight Thur and 2 low-low gears, power steering, and had a loader. I question why the manufacturer would use a vai instead of a vac or
the like for ditching. The vai was used more for road mowing because the higher gearing. But then mine is not to reason why. If you notice
these gear boxes replaced the tourque tube, so no belt pulley. Wayne

a VAI (Industrial) could be setup with many different gear ratios, like you stated many had a high speed road gear for mowing/ transporting,, but for the trencher aps they could have slow / creeper gearing,,, VAC was a farm unit not industrial

CN: To bad we are not within 100 miles or so, I would make you a heck of a deal on this one that I have. Wayne

Thanks all for the info, it helps a lot! If anyone can post a few pictures o how the deck plates and clutch and brake linkage mount that would be great, this one was missing the left deck plate and the brake linkages were pulled apart. Here are a few more pictures

Where are you located? I have a couple of VAI loader tractors but they are to high geared to be of much use. I am in eastern Washington and was wondering if you were in Washington also? Sounds like it would be very interesting to look at, Mike

So I'm going to turn this thread into a restoration thread, I have the motor off of the tractor and some pictures of the inner workings of the reduction unit
